DescriptionSuit: 3mm wetsuit or shortie Type of diving: Mostly sloping reefs and wall dives as well as a few wrecks Carriacou is a pristine, tiny island in the Caribbean that is only 13 miles long. It is surrounded by miles of white sandy beaches and palm trees, has year-round good weather and sits in the path of the trade winds. Petite Martinique to the east of Carriacou and Carriacou itself are the sister islands of Grenada, which is located south of Carriacou. It remains quite an untouched region of the Caribbean and if you visit the island you can expect to see it in a natural state, as conservation is of high priority. The tourist industry is simple and there are no high-rise hotels on the island or any big resorts. The underwater scenery in Carriacou is every bit as breathtaking as it is above the waves, and just as accessable. Most of the diving facilities in Carriacou are located in the south of the island, and most of the dives sites are within 15 minutes of the Grand Anse Beach. The scuba diving in Carriacou is some of the best in the Caribbean, and we boast the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean as well as an underwater volcano:
The Deep Blue (Sister Rocks): The wall starts at 9 metres and drops away to a depth of 40 metres. The current is generally strong, so this is a dive for experienced divers only. Touring around the "Big Sister" lets the diver "fly" along the second level of the reef. There is a second drop off at around 20 metres which offers the adventure of a deeper dive into a rock garden. The marine life typically found is turtles, barracuda, nurse sharks, giant lobsters, stingrays, black coral and more. An ideal site for taking photos. Sharky's Hideaway: This dive begins on a wall with a maximum depth of 23 metres. The dive becomes shallower towards the end (about 12 metres) as you reach a rock garden home to canyons, caves and overhangs. During the dive you should see lots of purple vase sponges, porcupinefish, grey angelfish, nurse sharks and occasionally giant green moray-eels as well as hundreds of copper sweepers. It is a great place for underwater photography, particularly macro shots, and is suited to both beginners and advanced divers. There can sometimes be a slight current. I recently came to Carriacou and took up the opportunity to learn to dive. I'm not experienced in the water, or a particularly confident swimmer, but the calm blue sea and relaxed demeanour of the owners of the dive centre convinced me that this was the right thing to do. Oh boy, do I wish I'd tried this 20 years earlier!!
