Description
Cyprus is an island in the East of the mediterranean sea, the main language is Greek but virtually everybody speaks English. Cyprus has a multitude of divesites along its south coast - from the shallow rocky coastline around Agia Napa and Protaras to the wreck of the Zenobia in Larnaca - one of the top 5 wrecks in the world - to the shallow wrecks and shores in Limassol and the deeper rocky coastline around Paphos and the Akamas. There is something for everyone and for all levels of divers - beginners to advanced technical and CCR divers.
From Agia Napa to the Akamas, many visitors come to Cyprus specifically to dive, either to learn to dive in the clear, shallow and warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea with excellent instruction offered by qualified diving schools or to spend some time exploring the various divesites and wrecks.
The premier dive site in Cyprus is the “Zenobia” wreck – an amazing wreck of an approx 200m ferry that sank in 1980 and lies about a mile off the shore in Larnaca. Lying on its port side in a maximum of 42 meters and reaching up to 17m it is a superb divesite for all levels of divers. Qualified divers with limited experience can swim along the top and look down on her massive structure and see the abundant fishlife which have made the wreck their home. Experienced recreational divers can swim around the wreck and make some gentle penetrations into the wreck in the light zone or further inside. Experienced Technical divers can explore her cargo decks. Engine Room and accommodation areas fully on Twinsets and Rebreathers and see the range of trucks, a car and cargo which are still onboard. Many divers spend a week exploring the wreck and can see something different on each dive.
In Agia Napa and Protaras there are many dive locations worth visiting. "Tunnels and Caves" is a dive destination situated at just ten minutes from the resort town, a divesite full of holes, tunnels, and dark crevasses reaching a depth of about 14m. Along with the beautiful scenery, divers have the chance to spot marine life such as octopus and local fish. "The Canyon" and the "Green Bay", both offer rich marine life and great photo opportunities and are excellent places for beginners or those wanting to refresh or learn new skills, while the more advanced divers have at locations such as "The Chapel", and "Cyclops". Moving round the coast to Limassol there are several wrecks including the “Copper wreck”, “Three Stars”, the “MV Habe”, and the “MY Diana” is a wreck of a wealthy Russian’s yacht that sank in the 90’s, which is suitable for more experienced divers and offers excellent photo opportunities with many fish and other marine life.
There is also some beautiful underwater scenery not just shipwrecks. “The Archway” and “Pinnacle” are full of various species of natural life including several intriguing rock formations, supposed to be caves that contain tombs. At “Twin Rocks” there are some caves and a large variety of fish, while the “Akrotiri Fish Reserve” is the best dive location to observe all the native sea life of Cyprus concentrated in one site. “Jubilee Shoals” is located between Limassol and Paphos and is a spectacular site, said to be the best in Cyprus after the Zenobia. It is suitable for experienced divers only. It’s a great place to see large pelagics such as tuna, jack & grouper as well as octopus and moray. The site consists of a vast underwater cliff face, with caves, pinnacles and a tunnel and dives offer drop-offs from the 20-m to 60-m levels.
Moving onto Pissouri and Paphos there are numerous shore and boat dives available including “St Georges Bay”, an ideal place to learn to dive or for Discover Scuba, “Amphitheatre” and “Pistol Bay” are shore dive with a maximum depths of 24m these are some of the most popular dive sites in the area, with reefs & walls, swim throughs & patches of hard coral there is also plenty of life. “Sea Caves” is littered with old pottery, this is an easy dive, the majority of which is in the calm waters of a bay with an easy walk in entry & exit. The wrecks round Paphos include the “Vera K” a Lebanese Freighter which grounded in shallow water, “The White Star” which now lies in 14-18 metres of water and is an excellent dive with the boat remaining largely intact and the “Achilleas” a wreck of a Greek vessel which mysteriously exploded & sank in 11m of water in 1975.
In the far west of Cyprus is the Akamas, a beautiful natural wilderness for divers and non-divers alike. There are numerous divesites which again cater to all levels of divers. “White River” is a shore dive located at the entrance to the Akamas National Park and is an ideal dive for the beginners & experienced divers alike, whilst “Aphrodites Beach” is a site ideal for beginners and with rock formations, sandy patches & a scattering of Amphora it’s a great place to see juvenile fish. Maximum depth 8m St George's Island in the Akamas marine reserve, is about 40 minutes by boat from the coast, this is an underwater mountain & one of a very few wall dives in Cyprus. This dive site offers something for everyone from beginners to the more experienced diver with various options for dives swim throughs & a cave and depths of up to 32m.
To ensure diver safety there are several hyperbaric chambers on the island including a modern state of the chamber just 10 minutes drive from the Zenobia. Cyprus is a beautiful island, an "easy to get to" destination, just 4½ hours from London, Paris or Moscow and 3½ hours from Dubai, with lots to do and see both above and below the water, so come on over and let us show you around.
