Description
Thailand is probably the best known, and most developed, of all dive-destinations in South-East Asia. With access to the Andaman Sea in the west, and the Gulf of Thailand in the east, and a well developed tourism infrastructure, it is easy to understand why.
The Story of Koh Tao or Turtle Island is one of relatively recent times. Once Fishermen used to come here to shelter from storms or take a break from their weary travels. Just before the turn of the century the King of Thailand paid a visit to Koh Tao & laid his mark upon Jor Por Rock on the southern end of Sairee Beach.
From the early 1930’s Koh Tao became a prisoner colony used to house political prisoners, until 1947 when the then Thai Prime Minister pardoned all the prisoners on the island. So the island became abandoned again but only for a short time as later that same year a couple of Fishermen set sail on their boat for Koh Tao from Koh Phangan. They claimed for themselves a healthy chunk of land, Sairee Beach, and after bringing their families over began to cultivate the soil. Koh Tao’s first family had arrived!
Diving Koh Tao
The diving season starts in January with a lot of sun, calm seas and visibility of about 10-15 meters average. Then throughout February the visibility will increase to around 20 meters on average with nice calm seas.

The diving season starts in January with a lot of sun, calm seas and visibility of about 10-15 meters average. Then throughout February the visibility will increase to around 20 meters on average with nice calm seas.
During March and April we go into Koh Tao's Whale shark season. This is generally the best month to visit Thailand for diving Koh Tao - lots of great diving all around the island.
May and June the wind gets a little stronger and the weather a little cooler - still great diving conditions but depending on the wind speed
Koh Tao is attracting both new-comers and experienced divers alike. The beauty of the coral reefs and the warm tropical water are promising fun for everybody. Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan offer more than 30 dive sites for you to explore. Some of whom belong to the best dive sites of Thailand. Such as Sailrock or Chumpon Pinnacle. No matter what time of the year it is, you will always find a spot for a beautiful dive somewhere near island.
In the bays around Koh Tao you can find many fun dive spots with gorgeous coral and fascinating rock formations. Many of these spots are not too deep and sheltered: that too makes Koh Tao an attractive spot to go into diving. Chumpon Pinnacle is known as the best dive spot of the region. This spot is located about 7 miles from the coast though, not suitable for beginners and unreachable when the water is turbulent.
The most famous dive site is The Unicorn Wreck: the wreck is of a large modern 1960's-70's steel freighter. The vessel leans slightly on its port side at an angle of 60 degrees with the top of the bow at 38m and the keel of the bow area several metres above the seabed allowing divers to swim under this area of the hull. The wreck is completely intact. All penetration is very tight with only room for one diver. Big schools of jacks, barracuda and bat fish patrol the area directly above the wreck.
