The Ionian Island of Lefkas gets its name from the 'White Rock' which frames the beaches on the west coast. It is surprisingly green and mountainous, with a seemingly endless number of long, sandy beaches. This quiet island, connected to the mainland by a bridge, is a fantastic place for watersports, with numerous bays and small islands for you to explore, including Skorpios, the island owned by the Onassis family. The main town of Lefkada is set around a picturesque bay, with traditional multi-coloured timber framed houses and a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Summer is the best time to visit to make the most of the fantastic watersports the island has to offer. Most hotels are open from May to October, with July and August the busiest (and hottest!) months.

Diving in Lefkas is different from other location on the Mediterranean sea. From the fauna with the usual pelagic fishes you can find colorful and in big quantity. In some area due to the fact the area is a no-fishing zone, the volume of fish-life is spectacular. Swim through dense schooling fish whilst looking for octopus, grouper and even ancient amphorae!

Whether you are beginner or experienced diver, you will find several diving spots that can suit your needs. As to name few, the secluded bay Friday Bay is an ideal site for beginners. The dive begins shallow, then, after a short swim, you will come across a vibrant sponge garden inhabited by different invertebrates, fishes and algae. Or following the shoreline of Big Brother, you will traverse a large ledge covered in crustaceans, star fish, and sea cucumbers.

For the diver who has some experience and wants to go a little bit deeper, St. Nicholas Island offers the best wall-diving in the bay. The sheer wall starts at about 5m and drops down to 20m, pocketed all along by countless nooks and crannies concealing all sorts of marine life.

Or if you want better aquatic life, including large shoals of fairy basslets, mullet, and grouper go and dive the Pinnacles, invisible from the surface. The pinnacle rises up from the depths of the Ionian and levels off at 10m down.

And if you don’t have enough Lefkas Cave is for you! Going down to 30m deep where you see a cave before ascending up into a long corridor, you will then come to the entrance of a larger cave at around 10m deep. Enjoy!
