Description
This Region, very undevelopped, is covering Pondicherry, Chennai, Tamil Nadu region. So you will have chance to see untouched reefs and amazing marine life you've never seen before.
With interest in SCUBA and water sports in general rising in India, the area is rapidly becoming famous, due to its beauty, but also as it is so unexpected. A common occurrence is the surprise on diver’s face as they see terrific marine life, with good visibility, and have a great day out with a world class dive operation.
Based out of an Ex-French colonial area, divers can experience Old meets New, and East meets West whilst on land, and all the abundance of tropical underwater life every day out in the ocean.
A break from the real India, Pondicherry offers croissants, beef steak and other assorted indulgences from the 1st world.
With ocean temperatures of 26-30 degrees, pack your shorty, and be ready for a range of warm water fish. Barracudas, Batfish, Morays, Snakes, Torpedo Rays, Triggerfish, Groupers, Nudibranchs, Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Banner fish, Snappers, Jacks and the like are part and parcel of a usual dive in these waters. If you’re lucky you may be part of the boat seeing a Whale shark, Manta or Eagle Ray, Dogfish, Turtles, Groups of Dolphin, or even something new that hasn’t been seen yet. And be sure, as in depth knowledge of the area is still in its infancy, this happens a few times a year, so be ready to have a new site or famous day named after you.
To date there are over 20 named and established regular dive sites used and commonly known. Another 10 are under research and mapping at the present time, but are shown to regular divers. A further 5 large areas, which spread up and down the coast are well guarded secrets of the local dive community. They may come into the open in the future, but for now locations are unknown to the public.

The best time to dive this coast is during the calmer months of January to May, when visibility is at its best (Up to 40m!) and currents are low. After that it is September to November. Monsoon keeps the boats out of the water in December and July, but the rest of the year, it is possible to get out and enjoy these untouched and unexplored areas of our underwater world. A full range of try dives and dive courses are offered by internationally trained instructors. The experienced diver and beginner can all join in alike.
So. Go somewhere you haven’t been. See something new. Join a small club of people who have pioneered a whole range of great areas which are just opening up to divers from around the world.
Pondicherry Dive Sites: 30 years of diving in Pondicherry has led to the discovery of some amazing dive sites here. Most have been discovered, marked, and mapped more recently with the use of modern equipment such as GPS and Sonar. It is a pleasure to dive on sites found by the pioneers of diving in Pondicherry. It is also special to find something new, previously never before seen by human eyes. All of the sites are excellent in both marine life and topography.
Here is below a small selection of the dive sites:
* 4 Corners: one of our premier traditional reef areas. Up to 18M depth, 4 corners is a great place for open water divers, and refresh courses. It has an abundance of marine life within it's structures of trees, rocks and palm leaf towers. This is the main area we find off shore cruising dolphins, in groups from 3-50. In addition, always in attendance are groupers, barracudas, lionfish, butterflys, banners, torperdo rays, and more. Av. vis 6M.
* Groupers Gorge: another of our artificial/feeder reef setups, this area used to be known as "Tyre Town". We have a large pyramid of tyres that float up from the bottom, in addition to the trees and palm towers. It was renamed after the huge influx of very large Groupers to the area, that didn't leave! A great site to show the benefits of feeder reefs and the excellent marine life of this tropical zone. Also the first place we saw Eagle rays, both underwater, and jumping out from the surface! Av. vis 6M.
* Shy Shark Reef: a great site that caters for all levels of diver. From snorkellers on the surface, intro divers at 5M, down through DSD at 12M, Open water and then Advanced. The maximum depth is 23M, where the real beauties are found. The site's namesake is sometimes found around the 14-19M mark. Coming in for a quick look and heading off again. This site is a natural reef comprosed of small bommies (scattered reef rising from the sandy bottom) and is helped with some small additions in the way of trees and towers. (Currently there is a rumor of a wreck there, but you will have to come and see to find out) Av. vis 8M.
* Aravind's Wall: Aravind's Wall is fast becoming famous around India (especially after the last whale shark sighting). This wall is the ultimate drift dive. After we found the wall, and kept researching, it was such a large area, natural progression led us to break it up into different dive sites. Currently we dive on 12 different areas of the Aravind's Wall, all of them special in their own way. Below are some of the more famous ones (not the secret ones!) Av. vis 10M.
* Ravines: a site named due to its deep flowing cuts in the rocky reef bed. From 30M, you will enjoy following the rises and ridges of the bottom topography, finding a huge range of life along the way. Apart from the great farm-like plants here, this place is also legendary for being where our first Manta Ray was spotted. Yes, indeed, a Manta. Av. vis 10M.
* The Hole: a new area of ours, only discovered in March 2011, and thus still has not been fully explored. This is a great site for Advanced divers, and even beeter for those with a Deep diver qualification. The dive starts from 30M with an excellent undulating bottom. The central part of this dive is the "hole" area. For Advanced divers, look down from the top. For Deep divers, come down with us and look into the neverending blackness all around that extends under the rock shelves. Take a torch and you can see a little further. This is where some of the really big creatures hide, staring out at us from the dark!
