As any diver I was very excited about making my way up the Australian coast to Cairns. Diving the Great Barrier Reef may be once in a lifetime opportunity. Two weeks prior I asked around for a good live-aboard and was told to go only with Prodive. Prodive was already booked for over two weeks ahead and next booking didn't suit my travel plans. So I decided to give Cairns Dive Center a try. How bad can it be I thought. It's the same reef for everyone. I purchased two night, three days package.

First sign that this won't be an experience to remember was the accommodation. Four of us shared a cabin directly across the storage room. The cabin stunk like mold so bad that it was difficult to sleep. Directly above my bunk, about 5cm from my face, the clima vent was blowing directly at my head while I slept. Nothing can destroy a dive trip like a cold, other than maybe not getting any rest at night. After three dives first day, good night sleep is a must to catch the 6am morning dive. Cabin was so noisy that night that I barely got 2 hours of sleep. Engines were working all night and it felt like I was sleeping in the engine room. On top of that, crew (dive instructors) had to restock the storage room at about 3am which required them to carry boxes of stuff down the stairs, stack them up with a bang, communicate (yell) etc. Needless to say, next day was not fun for me or the tired crew.

On the bright side the weather was absolutely perfect and being out there was magical. However, we spent almost the entire trip in just two locations. I logged 5 out of 10 dives at Fish Bowl. It's a nice site but point of a live aboard is the ability to explore the reef and see more sites. Weather could not be excuse.

When we got back to shore I talked to operations manager Peter about my experience. He wasn't very empathetic and said to give him my tel so he can call me in couple days to see if there is anything he can do. That call never came which indicates this is business as usual for Cairns Dive Center. The only redeeming quality is the crew but even they seemed demoralized and looking to get out of CDC.

That's the story of my experience. If you chose CDC, you may have better luck than me but think carefully if you want to leave such a great occasion to luck.

Pro Dive in cairns was in my mind a good bet for my 4 day live aboard in cairns.
The equipment appeared to be have been well used ,but there again it was well maintained.
Safety appeared to be an important aspect with a safety boat in the water at all times.
The dive sites appeared very well known to the staff. The dives where well organised and the dive teams knowledge of local flaura and fauna good.
A team spirit soon developed amongst the other divers helped along by the friendly staff. The food although basic was very good and althoughthe trip was a little pricey i would recommend this company to any body thinking of visiting the great barrier reef.
As for the diving, my highlight was seeing the green eyes of the sharks during the night dive.
Dont think about the trip, book it you will not be disappointed.
