Description
The Madeira Islands, 540 miles South West of Lisbon, Portugal, are a Portuguese archipelago positioned about 360 miles directly West of Marocco, Africa, in the North Atlantic Ocean.
They are a autonomous region of Portugal, with Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island being the only inhabited islands.
These islands are a popular year-round resort famed worldwide for their Madeira wine, a perfect climate, striking scenery and beautiful flowers with warm, pleasant summers and extremely mild winters.
Porto Santo island, with an area of 42,17 Km2 is characterized by two areas: The accidented north east and a superficial plain in the south west that includes a 9 km long white sand beach.
Although a small island, Porto Santo is a high developed community with their own schools, health-care center, police detachment, a gymnasium, churches, several local squares, a congress center, museum, shopping centers, a golf course, 8 tennis courts, an equestrian center, bars, hotels and restaurants.
The main industry on the island is tourism owing to the beach and temperate climate.
The island has an airport (PXO) with both domestic and international flights.
More than 20 different dive sites are waiting your visit. Among the most famous ones, we have:
- The “Madeirense”: an artificial wreck sunk in 2000, house of some friendly groupers.
-Barracuda Reef: amazing rock underwater geological formations
-Tuna Reef: Black coral and big fishes
These diving sites are all within 20 minutes boating on a generally calm and crystal clear sea.
The water temperature ranges from 17º in winter to 23º in summer. In winter a semi-dry suit is advised, a 5mm suit will be perfect in summer.
Because security is very important in diving, we have the air force ensuring a continuous standby 24/7; their mission is to ensure that the diver will be in a deco chamber within 45 minutes after the alert is given (helico evac).
All the dive boats are required to be equipped with first aid kits, pure oxygen tanks and wireless communications.
