DescriptionWater temperature: 22°C - 25°C (71°F - 77°F) is average
Suit: 3mm - 5mm wetsuit Visibility: 6 - 20 metres (20 - 65 feet) Type of diving: Reef diving Well known for its sheltered pristine beaches and perfectly moderate climate, Warrnambool is a wonderland for certified Scuba Divers who are searching for the ultimate underwater adventure.
Diving here can range from easy to intermediate, depending on the tide, swell and weather. This are can be quite dangerous if the sea is rough, with strong currents and surge when wells are up! It is best dived when the wind is coming from the North and the swell is very low.
Reefs are all around this island with some extending right from the bottom to the surface (10m walls). There are caves, tunnels, bull kelp forests, much marine life, etc.
Merri Marine Sanctuary is a stunning playground right at our doorstep. This area also offers some nice views for snorkelers for this part of the state, and is debatably one of the best shore dives that Warrnambool has to offer in the right conditions. Divers can enjoy an incredible range of marine life and awesome reef formations. Stingray Bay is a good shore dive with plenty of fish returning as it is now part of the Merri Marine Sanctuary. Please note the sanctuary area has a "no take zone policy" however there are many other sites in which Crayfish and other fish life can be taken.
Middle Island is another good spot, a shore dive with lots of swim throughs and magnificent scenery, although a strong current is sometimes present when wading through the islands. Pickering Point and Thunder Point are two very good dive spots, accessible by shore or boat, with breath taking scenery and under water landscapes. Dives range from 3 to 24 metres Warrnambool is also great base to explore the under water wonders of the Shipwreck Coast. The breakwater wall is home to juvenile fish and is about 4-6 metres on the inside and 5-8 metres on the outside. The shipwreck Labella is about 250 metres off the end of the breakwater and is a great dive with lots of fish life, plant growth and crayfish. The Labella sank in 1905 with the loss of 7 crew. She lies in 15 metres with the bow section still intact, south-east of the breakwater. WDR. Avis des utilisateurs
