Scuba Diving in Mozambique

Description
Diving in Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique.
Mozambique is a warm sunny country, with a mixture of cultures, colourful markets, wonderful people and amazing beaches. But when you look around you can see the effects of a bitter civil war which went for more 26 years, the infrastructure is very limited and a lot of the rural areas are very poor. As a result of the war there was no diving or tourism for a very long time. The Mozambique government is trying to undo the years of violence and destruction; slowly the beautiful villages are starting once again to grow. Ponta do Ouro is one of those beautiful villages on the southernmost tip of Mozambique. Over the last couple of years it has become well known amongst divers for its diving with its beautiful coral, abundance of colourful fish, invertebrates, game fish, large potato bass, naturally occurring sharks, and much more..... Incredible visibility, warm water, dives to suit and tempt everyone all year round.
Boats launch directly into the surf from a small bay; it is an easy launch with smallish waves and the ride to the dive sites is comfortable.
There are more than 30 dive sites - catering for divers of all certifications with depths ranging from 9m to 46m.

Here are a few of our favourite Dive Sites:
Blacks(18 m): cleaning station great for Macro Photography. Known for its abundance of Black Cheek eels, Pipe fish and Leaf fish.
Doodles (15-18m): world renowned site for its abundance of friendly Potato Bass giving the diver a wonderful experience up close and personal with them. Home to Manta, game fish and at least 8 different species of Rays, Ghost Pipe fish, Angler fish and Devil Fire fish. A highlight is the prolific shoals of Snapper and Dusky Sweepers. A must dive site for your log book. This is quite a small reef and consists of several rock formations scattered around. The bigger part has a wall on the one side that is almost 2 meters high and flattens to the other side. This reef "Rocks"! We saw 3 huge Honeycomb Rays nestling in the sand and I was in awe of these big round flat creatures. The Devil fire fish just hanging about looking like fairies with their featherlike fins. Round Ribbontail Rays and a couple of Blue Spotted Stingrays frequent the area. An Octopus was peeping out of one of the holes and we had to look hard to spot it between the coral and rocks. This area also has the most beautiful shells with Hermit crabs occupying it. We also saw some Heart Urchin shells, which are very fragile, and are seldom seen as an unbroken shell. This reef also has its own resident Potato Bass and Eels that are found here on a regular basis. A White tip Reef Shark is said to be seen here a number of times.
Atlantis (40 -46m): a reef for the more experienced diver. Also known as Lego land for its big symmetrical rectangular blocks. Black coral, green coral tree, Spanish dancers, Sea Apples and of course different species of sharks namely Tiger, Hammerhead and Bull shark to name a few.
Drop Zone (12-14m): this site is renowned for its natural beauty of soft and hard corals and sponges, brilliant turtle life and its topography of gulley’s and ledges.
3 sisters (24m): one of the most popular dive sites due to its amazing high wall topography. Fish life such as the Long Nose Hawkfish (unique to this site only), Angler fish, Garden Eels, Crocodile fish, Egg shell shrimps and a massive resident Honeycomb Eel as well as many different types of Nudibranchs make this a great site for all types of photography.
Anchor (18-22m): stunning ledge with the Trumpet fish, Royal angelfish (unique to this site only) as well as the occasional sighting of the resident Grey reef shark plus an abundance of anenome’s makes this dive very special.
Creche (9 -12m): the ideal first time sea divers treat for its depth and variety of juvenile and adult fish species. Renowned for its big Stone fish. Fantastic Photographic reef and a dive time of up to 75 minutes.
Pinnacles (30-35m): world renowned shark diving site. Experience wild shark diving (no baited diving) and see up to 10 species of sharks. Tiger, Bull, Black tip, Silver tip, Dusky, Spinners, Java, Leopard, Grey reef and of course the gracious Hammerheads! Divers report consistently 5 species of shark on each dive. Resident potato bass, Eagle and Devil Rays and the abundance of game fish make this site World class and an absolute must for your log book.
Steps (12-15m): Brilliant drift dive on a 1.5 kms long reef with an amazing variety of caves, ledges and species of fish. Photographers paradise.
Kev’s Ledge and Rhianna’ arch( 18-24m): beautiful swim through arch onto a 6 m ledge. Known for its Adult and Juvenile Ribbon Eels.

We had a fabulous time and our two children, age 14 and 11 in July 2014 learnt to Scuba Dive.
It was the best advice from a friend who said we must get them certified with Mike Mould of Blowing Bubbles Diving.
We had unusually cold weather but after a few days of settling in , we got in the pool to have a refresher course and this was the beginning of the course for our children. All went well and the next day we had two magnificent dives. The kids were enthralled with all the marine life and had no issues what so ever. Mike kept having them work on their skills by practising taking off masks and also taking regulators out and then using each others Octo to breathe.
The next day we had more amazing dives.
It`s nearly a year since they got their Naui OW1 and we dived as a family two weeks ago and the kids again were very comfortable and all went well.
Cant wait to go back to Ponta Do Ouro to discover more reefs and enjoy the hospitality of Gala Gala Eco Resort and their fantastic Dive School,
