Scuba Diving in the Gili Islands
|
Description
The Gili Islands are located to the northwest of Lombok, heading towards Bali. It takes about an hour to reach them from Senggigi Beach on Lombok itself. From west to east they are named Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. They are tiny islands surrounded by white sandy beaches that are covered with palm trees. None of the islands gets motorised transport – only bicycles & horse and carts are allowed. Resorts take the form of bungalows overlooking the sea.
Gili Trawangan is the biggest of the islands and it has more of a nightlife than Gili Air and Gili Meno, which are quieter in general. Gili Meno is home to a bird park and Gili Air is attempting to protect its local turtle population by using pens to help hatchlings develop.
There are more than 15 dive sites around the islands and more reefs are being explored all of the time. Most sites are suitable for beginners, but there are some that are more challenging for advanced divers. Visibility can be up to 50 metres, depths to over 2km! Marine life includes most common indo-pacific species. Some of the dive sites are shore dives, others have to be reached by boat. Snorkelling is also good around the three islands.
As this destination becomes more and more popular we advise you to check carefully the dive shop features before making any decision. Some are there for a long time (over a decade) and their reputation is good but days will be crowded, some others are more quiet but you will appreciate the customized welcome. It is up to you.
SAFETY for divers:
- there are 2 decompresssion chambers in lombok, one at the international hospital and the other in the marine hospital in Mataram bases. They can accept only one person.
